Nominated for a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance

"The music, which is fabulously orchestrated, has just about everything. It has a cinematic sweep. It doesn't quote or mimic folk music but it has its spirit. There are heartbreaking nostalgic melodies -- and there is ferocity. The performance was monumental."
 Los Angeles Times

"The music evokes pre-Columbian landscapes and images with a cinematic grandeur, sweep and colorfulness that go beyond the merely picturesque. Think of a manic cross between The Rite of Spring, Carlos Chávez and Philip Glass and you will get an idea of this astonishing finale."

The music of Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas is an exciting discovery -- melodic, accessible, as colorful as his native land. Born on December 31, 1899 and dead by the age of 40, Revueltas was a prolific composer of scores for orchestra and chamber music during the 1930s and represents the apogee of music composition in a culture that included such luminaries as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and José Clemente Orozco. His music sought to discover the innermost soul of the people of Mexico; in this year of his centennial, his music will be rediscovered across North America.

Esa-Pekka Salonen continues his traversal of the music of the 20th century with this exciting new collection of performances of works by a heretofore overlooked master from one of the world's most vibrant cultures. Salonen has staked out his claim as one of the foremost interpreters of 20th Century repertoire, and under his tutelage the Los Angeles Philharmonic has risen to the first rank of world orchestras.
