Yo-Yo MA Solo
|
A rare treat for Yo-Yo Ma fans: an intimate, purely solo album that showcases with breathtaking simplicity the talent and passion that has made Yo-Yo Ma a household name. With these five original compositions for solo cello, Yo-Yo visits the music of America, China, Russia, Hungary, and the former Yugoslavia, discovering melodies and traditions that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries. Album highlights include the solo version of "Appalachia Waltz", a new arrangement of the title track to the best-selling Americana collaboration between Yo-Yo, Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer (SK 68460), and "The Cellist of Sarajevo", a lament that was inspired by the true story of a cellist who daily dressed in concert attire and went to play at a spot in Sarajevo where, in 1992, a bomb had killed 22 people. Every day at 4 pm, the cellist played in memory of the dead, risking his own life without regard for grenade attacks or mortar and machine fire.
Winner of multiple Grammy Awards and with cumulated record sales in the multi-millions, Yo-Yo Ma continues to connect with audiences everywhere and has developed a dedicated fan base that reaches far beyond the traditional classical world.
