Biography

Daniele Gatti was born in Milan, where he graduated in composition and conducting. He is the new Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, a post he assumed in September 2016, when he completed his tenure as Music Director of the Orchestre National de France. Prior to these appointments he was Music Director of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Principal Guest Conductor at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Principal Conductor at the Zurich Opera House. He conducted many new productions at leading opera houses and festivals worldwide, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala Milan, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Zurich Opera House and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In December 2013, he opened the new season at La Scala with La Traviata. Maestro Gatti is one of the few Italian conductors ever to have been invited to the Bayreuth Festival, where he opened the 2008 edition with Parsifal. At the Salzburg Festival he conducted Elektra, La bohème, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Il Trovatore. His Falstaff was performed at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Dutch National Opera and at La Scala. With the Orchestre National de France, he created a Beethoven cycle in combination with five new commissions of French contemporary composers, and a Shakespearean cycle in addition to his Mahler and Tchaikovsky cycle. He made his début at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées with Tristan und Isolde, and by the same title he opened the 2016/17 season at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. Regular conducting engagements include Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, Bayerischer Rundfunk, and Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala. Among the highlights of 2016 his return to the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the completion of the Beethoven symphony cycle with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, of which he is Artistic Advisor. A US tour with the Orchestre National de France, a European tour with the Vienna Philharmonic, a summer festival tour with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, with which he has started a three seasons spanning tour named “RCO meets Europe” This year he conducted Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at La Scala, made a tour in China and Singapore with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which he will conduct again in Salome at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and during a tour in South Corea and Japan. He will open the new season at Teatro dell’Opera in Rome with La damnation de Faust. To be mentioned the recordings for Sony Classical dedicated to Debussy and Stravinskij with the Orchestre National de France and the DVD of Parsifal at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; for RCO Live the Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz.
