Levit's album was sparked by the tragic death of a close friend leading him to reflect on the experience of his loss at the piano, hovering between grief and despair, resignation and solace. The pianist has concentrated on works whose gloomy grandeur and melancholy beauty have occupied him for years, each of them paying tribute to the virtuoso possibilities of the piano. Poetic moments of contemplative silence blend with life-affirming and sensual music with a direct physical fascination. But above all Igor Levit takes the listener on a very personal, musical journey that everyone can relate to: "Life".
