Biography
Carlos Chávez was one of the most influential figures in the history of Mexican music. But he was actually far more than just a "Mexican composer" - a 2015 New York Times tribute put it this way. "From jarabes and foxtrots to Neo-Classical preludes and heaving symphonies, Mr. Chávez's œuvre represents a musician as vigilantly committed to the global as to the national."
His good friend and champion Aaron Copland considered Chavez one of the best examples of "a thoroughly contemporary composer."

A set of collection CDs of Carlos Chávez's recordings for Columbia. Among others, the recordings of the ", Sinfonía de Antígona" and the popular "Sinfonía india", made in 1938 for RCA Victor, appear here on CD for the first time. The focus is on the total of six, immensely colorful symphonies, but his original ballet music and chamber music are also represented here - up to the ballets "Los cuatro soles" and "Píramide", recorded in 1973.
