The Italian conductor Claudio Abbado (1933–2014) was one of the later 20th century’s finest and most beloved musicians.
Abbado studied in his home city of Milan, first conducting La Scala in 1960, and received encouragement from Leonard Bernstein. In 1989 he was selected as Karajan’s replacement to direct the Berliner Philharmoniker, and held the post until 2002. He subsequently set up several acclaimed orchestras. His late appearances conducting the Lucerne Festival Orchestra are legendary.
